The Citizens Hall of Fame is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. In celebration of this milestone, the submission deadline for nominations for 2012 has been advanced to November 30, 2011.
As a result, after the selection committee in December has selected a worthy inductee there is sufficient time to enable the assigned local sculptor to complete the portraiture of the inductee to present at the induction ceremony held in late summer 2012.
“I look forward to receiving nominations this year that put forward Winnipeggers, past and present, who have made significant contributions to Winnipeg’s quality of life,” said Rick Preston, chair of the Citizens Hall of Fame program.
In September 2011, the Citizens Hall of Fame held its induction ceremony and reception for Harold Buchwald, its 38th inductee. As planned, the sculpted bust of Buchwald, created by local sculptor Madeleine Vrignon, was unveiled, making the special commemorative event that more special to the family and friends of the recipient. The following day, the bronze bust was installed at the Citizens Hall of Fame site in Assiniboine Park to be enjoyed by all.
Also new this year is the use of QR codes. On Buchwald’s pedestal, just under the bronze plaque, a QR code is present that when scanned connects to his biography page on the www.winnipegfame.ca website. The other 37 inductees will receive QR codes next spring/summer.
Since the WinnipegREALTORS® Association created the Citizens Hall of Fame in 1986, 38 outstanding Winnipeggers have been inducted.
The Citizens Hall of Fame is located in Assiniboine Park in the formal gardens area, which is located just off the intersection of Corydon Avenue and Park Boulevard. Each inductee is honoured with a bronze bust created by a local artist as well as a special bronze medallion created by sculptor Eva Stubbs.
The full inductee list with their biographies is available at www.winnipegfame.ca as well as the nomination forms which can be easily downloaded to make a submission. Nomination forms can also be picked up at 1240 Portage Ave. The Citizens Hall of Fame is on Facebook too.
